Faccio il compleanno l’undici Maggio e l’undici Luglio, due mesi dopo, ho ricevuto un prezioso regalo: Fabrizio Catalano mi apre le porte della casa del nonno, Leonardo Sciascia, a Palermo. Difficile dire le sensazioni senza incorrere nella retorica della reverenza: se si può parlare di aura, per come la intese Benjamin,  ecco quella sicuramente è presente in questa casa. Meglio ancora risponderebbe Bachelard, questo è lo spazio “dell’immensità intima”, e io ne sto varcando la soglia.

C’è la scrivania intatta, per come l’ha lasciata lui, gli oggetti disposti con un ordine che  si presume non casuale (mi piace immaginare che la lucida ragione speculativa intervenisse anche in queste minuzie della vita quotidiana) , una macchina da scrivere , cimelio di ‘antico scrittore’, una foto di Pirandello a lato, una di quelle foto  ampie, con la cornice argentea che solitamente si riservano alle madri, ai fratelli, ai grandi affetti. E ancora oggetti che parlano di lui: sulla scrivania, un piccolo calendario manuale con i numeri girevoli, ne ricordo l’esistenza perché anche il mio, di nonno, segnava i giorni in questo modo, i singoli giorni che devono essere segnati, altrimenti si perdono nel vuoto, nell’oblio. Quel piccolo oggetto reca la data del  19 novembre, data della  vigilia della sua morte. La moglie ha voluto fermare il tempo, o per lo meno quel tempo,  quell’istante in cui  dolore ha scoccato la sua ora.  

Il calendario manuale

Immagino che la grande riflessione sulla morte e sull’esistenza prendesse vita anche da queste vicende personali che generavano poi grandi immagini, grandi personaggi. Il suo studio ha anche una particolarità: è una stanza avvolta dai libri. Avrei potuto dire piena, come lo sono le stanze e gli studi degli scrittori e degli artisti, ma questo verbo rende meglio la sensazione di piena avvolgenza.  I libri sono disposti su una parete e dirigono lo sguardo in orizzontale, quasi fosse l’immanenza a prevalere in questa teoria di scritti, chissà voglio immaginare e speculare un po’ anche io. Di contro, le altezze verticali delle pareti sono occupate da una quadreria importante: riconosco quello a me più familiari: Guttuso, Caruso suo grande amico. Amava l’arte,  i romanzi dialogano spesso con le opere d’arte; si capisce che ogni singolo quadro di questa stanza è una piccola finestra su un senso ulteriore.

Renato Guttuso : La morte dell’inquisitore

Molti surrealisti, come se la realtà, allo stesso modo la verità, potesse essere raccontata attraverso una necessaria deformazione , per apparire più nitida.   Il mio sguardo si dirige ora verso un quadro che è posto dietro la scrivania, messo lì per essere guardato e per interrogare chi guarda. È un’illustrazione di Guttuso “La Morte dell’inquisitore” un’opera dai tratti decisi, una “visione” che contiene la realtà e tutto ciò che potrebbe essere, in un unico spazio.

Nella mia mente si affastellano dei fotogrammi in sequenza rapida: quella macchina da scrivere che ticchetta rapida, il fumo della sigaretta che esala dal portacenere, una ruga pensosa, quella che si piega tra un occhio e l’altro, sollecitata da due pensieri, quello dei giusti e quell’altro dell’inquisitore che emette la sentenza definitiva, mentre una nota si fa più acuta e stringente, e riverbera sulla morte…   le ultime parole di Frate Diego la Matina “dunque Dio è ingiusto” è la formula chiave del romanzo saggio del 1964.  E qui ritorna, e lo sento vivido e forte, lo Sciascia dostoevskiano, quello che oppone al male del mondo contro gli innocenti la il dubbio di una fede che si interroga, – lampi di Ivan Karamazov- vissuta un po’ come Fëdor nel crogiuolo del dubbio, quello di ogni vero libero pensatore.Nonostante una piccola foto incorniciata di Tolstoj che Fabrizio mi mostra a conferma dell’amore letterario per questo autore, ci sono delle frequenze dostoevskiane che vibrano, costanti.

Nell’’ultima stanza, quella intima, entro con pudore. Non è reverenza, ma la stanza da letto è un luogo sacro e varcarlo è per me entrare in una dimensione da preservare. Non dirò nulla se non che il Cristo di Odilon Redon accanto al capezzale mi ha catturato per un minuto eterno, tanto misterioso e abissale è il volto di quest’uomo, un volto glabro, ben lontano dalla classica iconografia. A me sembra un Cristo che potrebbe essere chiunque, un bambino un giovane un adulto, un uomo di qualsiasi nazionalità di qualsiasi etnia, o forse anche un uomo semplice, uno che incontri per strada, o che hai già incontrato. Lascio questo mistero per rivolgere un’ultima domanda a Fabrizio. Abbandono lo scrittore e il nipote del grande scrittore: adesso voglio un momento speciale, un aneddoto, voglio un bambino e suo nonno a scambiarsi un momento indimenticabile.

Fabrizio e il nonno, seduti nelle campagne di Racalmuto nella residenza alla Noce, le pietre che rilucevano della luce lunare, si parlava della vita dopo la morte. Sì, era un bambino molto curioso, Fabrizio, il nonno lo sapeva e così gli rispose: “Di fronte a questo dilemma c’è soltanto il dubbio”. Mai risposta fu più sciasciana.
