Il genere FK. In dialogo con Franz Krauspenhaar

D: Il titolo del tuo romanzo La presenza e l’assenza  edito da Arkadia  nella collana Sidekar, è un abbinamento dicotomico interessante. Presenza e assenza sono istanze interdipendenti che si rincorrono, si completano si compendiano. Entrambe hanno a che fare col desiderio: l’assenza è sempre legata all’eros, e non è un caso che il tuo romanzo parta da un indizio di tradimento e da una donna che scompare nel nulla, come presenza che si fa assenza. Lo stesso protagonista, l’investigatore Cravat lotta (al contrario – ma simmetricamente -) con una assenza che si fa presenza nei ricordi, nei pentimenti, nella nostalgia di una storia sentimentale che è interrotta: Francesca, poi sostituita da Carla. Mi pare che questa presenza/assenza- tra eros e fantasmi- generi un ritmo che fa muovere la pagine delle tua scrittura, un battere e levare che dà vita a  situazioni, sentimenti, caratteri. Me ne vuoi parlare meglio?

R: Direi che hai colpito nel segno. Il romanzo è proprio una specie di lungo giro di giostra tra la presenza e l’assenza, tra la vita e la morte. Dietro le avventure di Cravat c’è anche la metafora di una condizione umana fissa e angosciante. In fondo siamo tutti condannati all’assenza. Ma nel libro, ci tengo a dirlo, non c’è alcuna dichiarazione di ateismo.  Anzi, nel finale appare, se così si può dire, una “presenza” che potrebbe anche essere qualcosa di soprannaturale.

 D: Credo che una delle caratteristiche del tuo stile sia quello di giocare con i generi e costruire dei romanzi che ibridano le caratteristiche standard per creare qualcosa di originale che sfugge alle etichette; come hai fatto per Brasilia, scrivendo un romanzo distopico che è poi una riflessione sul futuro e sul tema dell’immortalità – che mi ha ricordato molto L’isola come possibilità di Houellebecq-  anche questo ultimo romanzo contiene un mix di elementi che sono tipici dell’hard boiled, noir o neo-noir,  ma si apre anche a forme monologiche quasi teatrali, in cui i grumi psicologici dell’investigatore Cravat sembrano dominare la scena, dettare le regole. Cosa è allora la detection per te e quale tipo di umanità svela in questo romanzo?

R: E’ un noir che si può leggere a strati, chiaramente.  Come hai detto tu io lavoro sui generi per farli sparire. Molto immodestamente, cerco il mio genere, il genere FK. Ho scritto romanzi sull’Italia degli ultimi 70 anni, un romanzo epistolare ambientato in Germania ecc. Mi mimetizzo dentro me stesso. Purtroppo non avere un solo registro ti rende meno identificabile per lettori e critici. La forma monologica è una mia forma tipica. Scrivo quasi sempre in prima persona, in maniera diciamo così confessionale. Qui uso anche la seconda e la terza però, ma in maniera funzionale. Tutto deve essere funzionale per me, senno’ non funziona, non “gira”.                                                  

La detection non è propriamente una mia vera passione. La passione, una delle passioni, è il noir, soprattutto cinematografico e francese. Nell’altro noir uscito 15 anni fa, Cattivo sangue, il protagonista è un killer con l’alibi dell’export manager. L’umanità che si svela è quasi tutta marcia, disperata, corrotta. Mi pare di raccontare cose piuttosto realistiche, seppure a modo mio.

D: Guido Cravat è un investigatore con una personalità incredibilmente sfaccettata: a tratti è cinico, sordido, sentimentale, sarcastico. Ha una grande umanità, si percepisce, nonostante la vita lo abbia indurito e reso impermeabile alle concessioni metafisiche. La ricerca della verità non ha nulla di filosofico in lui, è un uomo di carne e sangue, un “improvvisatore mascherato da duro”, come si autodefinisce e la sua è una scommessa con l’esistenza e con quelle maledette 24 ore che compongono la giornata, finirle con dignità, cercando un senso al dolore che gli pesa dentro. Un dolore d’esistenza, puro che non si placa e che si ripresenta in queste fitte di ricordi del passato. Ti sei ispirato a qualche figura del giallo o del noir oppure Cravat è un personaggio che attinge dalla vita, da una tua visione personale?

R: Mi sono ispirato a Jim Thompson e ad altri mille scrittori e registi. Per il cinema, Jean Pierre Melville, un vero genio del genere, morto nel 73. Cravat mi assomiglia, non lo nascondo, sono uno che ha sofferto e che soffre, anche di depressione. Non me ne frega niente del giudizio degli altri, se questi altri sono degli imbecilli o persone che disprezzo. Sto ad ascoltare solo chi stimo, che non necessariamente è un mio “fan”. Sono un solitario, proprio come Cravat. Certo, la pistola l’ho usata solo al servizio militare, mille anni fa. Diversamente, sono anche un animale estremamente sociale, quando la compagnia mi aggrada.

D: In questo romanzo ciascuno s’ abbevera alla fonte del male: chi più chi meno si è macchiato di una qualche forma di infamia, nessuno escluso. Non c’è un personaggio positivo in senso stretto, un deuteragonista che fa da alter ego e che conduce verso la luce. La gamma delle perversioni si allarga fino a comprendere il sadico che arriva a uccidere freddamente un uomo pur di estorcergli delle informazioni. Mi sembra che questo scardini la consueta gerarchia del noir o comunque del poliziesco in generale: l’assassino o presunto tale sembra essere una chimera e il vero sadico è uno dei tanti che si avvicendano nella trama: è anche un romanzo delle ossessioni e delle perversioni che albergano negli uomini di potere e negli ambienti del malaffare e dell’alta imprenditoria. Quale è lo sfondo etico (se ce n’è uno) e quale possibilità di redenzione (se ce n’è una)?

R: Vedi, volevo semplicemente essere estremo. Le vie di mezzo, i conti preventivi, non mi interessano. La vita a mio avviso è un’esperienza estrema, nel bene e nel male. Lo sfondo etico è quello che ci propone l’informazione a tutte le ore. Un pantano. Credo di essere un moralista, ma non faccio sermoni. Ma non posso raccontare certi ambienti senza un po’ di coraggio. Altrimenti farei come molti miei colleghi politicamente corretti. Io sono scorretto, ma nel senso che cerco, invano naturalmente, la mia verità. È una questione di carattere e, appunto, di etica. La redenzione c’è già, è dentro Guido Cravat, che non rinuncia ad essere umano, anche ad amare, seppure con poca fortuna.

D: Karacauer dice che “la legalità contrappone i principi della due parti della società così la polizia ad essa inerente può penetrare nel territorio dell’illegalità solo in qualità di istituzione legale, potendo agire esclusivamente sul terreno legale – mentre il detective può procedere indifferentemente sia contro la legalità che contro l’illegalità.-” Queste due posizioni vengono incarnate dai due detective del romanzo, Cravat e il suo discepolo Saluzzi, ex poliziotti entrambi ma con peculiarità molto diverse. Mi sembra tuttavia che il cinismo di Cravat non sia amorale e patologico come quello di Saluzzi un detective decisamente inquietante e senza scrupoli. Tuttavia, Cravat ha un atteggiamento paternalista nei suoi confronti. Quanto è illegale il maestro e quanto il discepolo? Saluzzi è un Cravat degenerato?  Sono in fondo due parti di uno stesso personaggio?

R: No, no, sono due personaggi ben diversi. Sul paternalismo si, c’è, ma il nucleo di questo paternalismo è un grumo molto duro di sarcasmo e di odio feroce. Rappresentano proprio due individui ben distinti. Cravat è già abbastanza pieno di contraddizioni, e Saluzzi è praticamente un serial killer. Lui è quello veramente illegale. Vive con la mamma, suona la tromba, e per vivere fa il detective dove può sfogare la sua vera passione: l’omicidio, la tortura, l’orrore.

D: Questa domanda in un certo senso si lega a quella precedente. Cito Sciascia questa volta e precisamente quando dice: “I fatti non sono contraddittori, un fatto rimane tale, sulle intenzioni si può speculare.” Quello di Cravat non mi pare un caso di coscienza, sa essere amorale ma ha una sua etica interiore del tutto avulsa dal contesto sociale e professionale. Insomma il tuo detective è deontologicamente non catalogabile- É una scheggia che vaga, lo muovono l’assenza e il vuoto che cerca di colmare con una qualche azione riparatrice. Cerca quella  donna, non sua, solo perché  sta sublimando la sua assenza, che tuttavia lo tortura. Stando ai fatti, cosa fa Cravat per ottenere quella felicità che sembra un diritto? La scena finale è l’abbraccio a quella presenza tanto agognata o è l’ennesima fregatura della vita? Cosa dicono le intenzioni e i fatti?

R: Sciascia era forse il più grande scrittore italiano di quella parte del nostro Novecento. Ma anche europeo. Dici bene, Cravat è una scheggia, ma come la maggior parte di noi, solo che in lui la velocità della scheggia è decuplicata. Ma non è affatto impazzita. Dalla presenza, di cui non sappiamo nulla, potrebbe essere un’allucinazione o addirittura un alieno, lui proprio alla fine fugge. Ma perché? Non posso dire altro, amo il mistero più di ogni altra cosa, illibro, come lo fu per Brasilia, rappresenta la vita, che si chiude e spedisce i personaggi dove “vuole”.E’ l’antigiallo per eccellenza. Non che non ami i gialli di qualità, ma da ragazzo fui folgorato da Dürenmatt: dal suo “requiem per un romanzo giallo”, La promessa, un romanzo colossale. E’ un giallo che si conclude con un’ossessione, non si chiude, in pratica.

Vedi, non amo i generi. Voglio dire, molti libri di genere li ho amati e ammirati coi loro autori, ma per quanto mi riguarda, e il mio curriculum mi è testimone, io amo variare e contaminare. Lo trovo anche onesto. Certo, senza falsa modestia credo che meriterei molta più attenzione, sono parecchio sottovalutato. Si vive in un sistema drogato di quella pesante, ma insomma… ci siamo capiti. Io vado avanti, la peggior cosa per una persona che ha del talento è sprecarlo.

Cravat in amore è una frana, o forse semplicemente si innamora delle donne sbagliate per lui. È un uomo molto serio, non va con le prostitute a pagamento e non, sa aspettare, ma la sua solitudine è una pozza di dolore. Potrebbe avere altre donne, ma lui vuole amare. Come hai detto bene, è un personaggio sfaccettato, capace di passare dall’odio, alla truffa, alla ricerca di un vero sentimento. La vita è una cosa complessa, e l’uomo, in fondo, è la vita che si muove.

D :Il giallo senza soluzione, o antigiallo, come dici tu è probabilmente la formula più interessante di questo genere. Sciascia in Appunti sul giallo fa risalire a Gadda l’nvenzione del giallo aperto e il Contesto è un romanzo senza soluzione, aperto a molteplici interpretazioni, Il protagonista della promessa di Dürrenmatt da te citato dice che con la “logica ci si accosta solo parzialmente alla verità”. Mi sembra che i migliori risultati letterari optino per questa strada, quella del sottosuolo, della logica applicata alla dannazione, una formula impossibile ma che tutti gli investigatori più riusciti hanno sposato. Diventare in qualche modo vittima, carnefice e spogliarsi delle carte, degli appunti. Un viaggio dentro gli abissi della psiche di chi gravita attorno al delitto. Mi sembra anche che non ti piacciano le soluzioni facili e le logiche deduttive in generale come scrittore e in questo ultimo scritto ne ha dato ulteriore prova. Mi piacerebbe una tua ultima riflessione in merito.

R: Sono perfettamente d’accordo con quanto tu dici. È come in certo senso andare oltre lo spettacolo.  Si, ci siamo più o meno divertiti; ora, nonostante i morti necessari alla narrazione, le paure, anche il terrore, il fantasma della morte che di continuo fa la sua prima e ultima apparizione, perché la morte è come l’attrice di un solo episodio, ecco intervenire qualcosa di imprevisto: la vita. È un po’ come nel vecchio film di Buñuel, Estasi di un delitto, nel quale il protagonista, causa un trauma infantile, è sempre sul punto di uccidere, e poi qualcosa, che forse non fa parte del mondo dei sensi, lo fa fallire, fino a un lieto fine assolutamente inaspettato. Qui non ci sono lieti fini, la morte è sempre sulla corda più grave di un violino che suona un pezzo mortifero, anche se ci sono delle battute di umorismo magari nero, ma alla fine il finale lo piazzo nella mia testa e soprattutto in quella del lettore. Cravat fugge, erra, forse dalla vita stessa, forse dal terrore di una vita extraterrestre, o dalla paura delle sue reazioni, e non ne sappiamo più niente. Tutto è andato a rotoli, cioè dove era per me giusto che andasse. Un lettore mi ha parlato di “senso di incompletezza”. Lo posso capire. Ma cosa è la vita se non una commedia che si interrompe nei momenti spesso più impensati? È il finale dei finali, quello. Io trovo senza falsa modestia questo mio un grande finale, che apre infinite possibilità, che crea interrogativi di una certa sostanza.
Forse sarebbe stato più semplice chiudere in una maniera più tradizionale, ma la tradizione secondo me va pugnalata, a volte, perché non ci fa fare un passo in avanti, ed è quello che il lettore smaliziato in fondo desidera, andare oltre.
