Suite Etnapolis: l’epos di un mondo in vetrina. La poesia di Antonio Lanza.

C’è una dimensione epica e al contempo paradigmatica nel quotidiano, che l’arte talvolta riesce a cogliere e restituire, facendoci un grande dono, specie se quel quotidiano è logorante, spersonalizzante, quanto di più lontano dall’armonia, dalla sobrietà e, in ultima analisi, dalla gratuità. Appare così al poeta la sfibrante routine di un centro commerciale ipertrofico, caleidoscopio di luci colori suoni rumori sollecitazioni d’ogni genere, meccanismo senza anima che tritura tutto quello che contiene (merci, persone, idee, relazioni) in una catena senza respiro e sempre uguale a se stessa.

Il poeta in questione è Antonio Lanza, autore originario di Biancavilla, paese etneo, che quel contesto ha conosciuto bene, avendoci lavorato e avendolo osservato (e vissuto) nelle sue dinamiche. Il suo Suite Etnapolis, edito nel 2019 da Interlinea, è ambientato proprio nel centro commerciale di Etnapolis, alle falde dell’Etna, progettato dall’architetto Fuksas nel 2004, quinto in Italia per dimensioni e vivace attrattiva per molti abitanti della zona pedemontana e non solo. L’autore lo fa rivivere, nitido e spietato, in un libro complesso tanto dal punto di vista tematico quanto sotto l’aspetto formale, con una grande carica di umanità che non lascia indifferente il lettore.

Si tratta di un lavoro che può ascriversi al filone della poesia civile, nell’alveo di una tradizione ricca di contributi importanti (da Pagliarani a Di Ruscio, solo per citare alcuni nomi, fino alle più recenti uscite di Targhetta, Ilaria Grasso e l’antologia La nostra classe sepolta). Questo macrotesto, che al suo interno contiene trame intersecantesi e varie piste di riflessione, è però una realtà composita e sfugge ad una definizione univoca.

La prima scelta strutturale che balza agli occhi è quella di una sorta di prosimetro, che, a ben guardare, va oltre l’alternanza prosa-poesia e coinvolge modalità espressive diverse, dai messaggi social all’intervista, a tratti “censurata” alla Isgrò, dalla conversazione telefonica al monologo al flusso di coscienza, in una sorta di zapping, un susseguirsi e incastrarsi, in giochi di costruzione e decostruzione di senso.

Ne consegue un’interessante commistione di linguaggi, di materiali anche extra-letterari e di registri talvolta molto diversi tra loro, ma sempre funzionali ad una rappresentazione vivida, da presa diretta. Un’atmosfera tuttavia così onirica, atemporale, per quella ciclicità spietata che caratterizza la scansione del tempo nel centro commerciale, quasi novella creazione-coazione a ripetere di una serie di operazioni che tengono in vita quel mondo.

Il libro abbraccia infatti un arco temporale di una settimana lavorativa di Etnapolis, che inizia però dalla domenica, non a caso giorno di non riposo, in una cosmogonia centrata sulla vendita e sul profitto: “Santa e benedetta la domenica di Etnapolis, / santo il profitto santo lo sfruttamento santa la pena”.

È un mondo dentro il mondo, un’antonomasia, un congegno che si mette in moto, inesorabilmente uguale a se stesso, suadente e perentorio: “s’infratta distorto il messaggio: acquistare è buono. Tutta / Etnapolis è raggiunta da etnapolis, / non c’è angolo che scampi al suono / della sua voce”. Le ore, monotone e prevedibili, piatte e orizzontali nonostante il loro scorrere, sono scandite dagli annunci delle voci al microfono, la maschile, autoritaria, normativa, e la femminile, suasoria, invitante: “Il lavoro che sta per iniziare l’inizio / del lavoro il lavoro che sta per finire / la fine del lavoro tutto qui è predefinito / da voci registrate tutto qui è finalizzato / e che siano in sincrono tutte le attività”.

Nella bolla artificiale del centro commerciale “il tempo / pur passando anche di qui, qui / non lascia storia, perentorio / big bang di cemento da cui d’un colpo / questo bianco Etnapolis è sorto”.

Dentro questo ambiente si muovono personaggi molto diversi, ognuno con il proprio carico di sofferenza, ignoto al carosello che li circonda. I loro discorsi sono contraddistinti dall’uso di registri differenti tra loro: Alfredo, in crisi per l’imminente nascita di un figlio e con poche certezze nella vita, Samuele, dallo sguardo curioso e critico su ciò che lo circonda, Cinzia, che lo ama e condivide con lui la “prigionia” del lavoro di commessa, Vanessa inquieta neomamma, tormentata da una nuova immagine di sé- che non accetta- e dal pensiero di un bimbo che rivedrà solo a sera, Daria, assetata di vita, Laura, che vive nella paura di dover pagare cara la propria avvenenza, con l’ombra di uno stalker alle spalle.

Li accomuna l’opprimente sensazione di essere dei forzati del lavoro (“puntuale nel respiro / la coda dell’obbedienza”, “Etnapolis dei cani / sedati dietro le gabbie”), la “prigionia” (“Ti ricordi, con un misto / di eroismo e malinconia / il cielo com’era chiaro / prima di entrare / stamattina”, “Poi ci si ingrotta”), l’ansia sottile, persistente, della precarietà (“Un diffuso stato di allarme, inudibile / perché chiuso nel buoi dei polsi, / nei turni trascorsi / in solitaria: le lamentele, le minacce dei titolari perché / gli incassi sono al di sotto/ delle aspettative, la probabile / riduzione del personale”).

Accanto ai commessi, intorno, altre presenze che sembrano sagome, disegnate dai loro ruoli, ma che rivelano la propria umanità attraverso piccoli gesti, come la guardia giurata Nuccio o le addette alla pulizia, che, nel “coro” intitolato Le silenziose, esprimono attraverso la voce del poeta le frustrazioni di una vita: “(…) da ragazze, giovanotti / e buona sorte si alternarono in ginocchio, / i gradini delle scuole sembrando / un trampolino di tre metri da cui / staccarsi fiduciose per il tuffo: e poi, / come fu che poi l’aria a tradimento / si assottigliò”.

Sono tessere di un’umanità mortificata da tempi, ruoli, contesti che la costringono in una gabbia, reboante, di luci e ombre: “colonia penale, Etnapolis / pista di decollo, navicella spaziale, Ecclesia – / piàcciati entrare intera nel mio canto, / le luci come l’immondo”.

Originale, nel suo attingere alla tradizione, appare lo stile. E non è un paradosso, ma una delle operazioni più delicate che un autore possa decidere di compiere. Nella scrittura di Antonio Lanza troviamo rimandi alle narrazioni più antiche, dalle Sacre Scritture all’epica classica, poiché è costante tanto il richiamo alla forza declamatoria dell’epos quanto ad una sorta di nuova “sacralità” del contesto commerciale, entrambe in chiave non direi parodistica, ma comunque rovesciata e problematica.

Ecco dunque, da una parte, la descrizione dei personaggi mediante epiteti (i clienti “camicia a scacchi”), inconsueti patronimici (“Laura di Lovable”) e accusativi alla greca, la costruzione della frase con i gerundi e con calchi dell’ablativo assoluto; dall’altra parte, il tono salmodiante di alcune parti e il richiamo esplicito ai costrutti di Qoèlet (“Etnapolis di etnapolis” come “Vanità di vanità”).  L’uso di artifici retorici si muove su una doppia linea di intenti: è aderente, quasi in modo mimetico, all’oggetto, nel caso dell’accumulatio, coerente al susseguirsi convulso di clienti, di merci, di scontrini; risulta invece “straniante” nel ricorso all’aggettivazione spinta, articolata in endiadi e in ossimori, che collocano Etnapolis in una dimensione atemporale e dialettica: “Materna e Moloch / Etnapolis, Mammona e Maschera / di lupa – Multisala, Multicefala” o le dedicano complesse litanìe: “Amaro e noia Etnapolis, pletora / di insegne Etnapolis, macropaese / di sconosciuti, Idolo, Edicola, / Obolo, Offerta Votiva”.

La bulimia di Etnapolis, “nuvola a vuoto dell’euro”, sembra inarrestabile: solo un evento o una presenza esterna, più volte confusamente immaginata, paventata e allo stesso tempo quasi desiderata dalla voce narrante, potrebbe portare un cambiamento di segno. Sarà quel che accadrà nella parte finale del libro, schiudendo nuovi scenari nei quali l’autore non si inoltra.

Al di là delle scene concitate (e profetiche) dell’epilogo, che non voglio anticipare, resta impressa nella memoria di chi legge la scena potente, centrale, nella quale si lacera la borsa degli acquisti con l’eloquente logo Hevel, termine che rimanda al campo semantico dell’inutilità, del non senso, ennesimo richiamo all’Ecclesiaste. La borsa della spesa si squarcia e tutte le merci si spargono caoticamente per terra: immagine emblematica del vano affannarsi ed accumulare, tanto nel micromondo di Etnapolis quanto, a più larga e drammatica scala, nel villaggio globale, iperattivo e miope del consumismo odierno.

Poco fa, non lo hai sentito? Le hanno fatto trovare tutti e due gli sportelli aperti e una bottiglietta di benzina sul sedile. Ma com’è che non hai sentito nulla?

Tre domande ad Antonio Lanza

 

 D: Da quale sostrato personale nasce Suite Etnapolis?

R: L’idea di scrivere Suite Etnapolis nasce da una esperienza lavorativa in una libreria di catena proprio a Etnapolis, dal 2011 al 2015. Nonostante la stesura del poema mi abbia preso soltanto gli ultimi due anni, tra l’agosto del 2013 e l’agosto del 2015, posso affermare che Etnapolis è stato da subito uno straordinario motore di immaginazione e di scrittura. L’ambiente lavorativo rilassato, le luci, la musica, la festa perenne mi suggerivano però storie, idee e temi improntati a un tono ironico, giocoso, al più sarcastico. E la poesia sembrava restarne fuori. Poi però è arrivata la crisi economica, con il conseguente dramma dei negozi che chiudono, degli amici che perdono il lavoro, dell’allarme sempre più prossimo che tra poco potrebbe travolgere anche te, appena sposato e con un figlio in arrivo. Mi trovavo al punto in cui storia personale e destino collettivo si incontrano, e contavo di poterlo raccontare, che ne valesse la pena, e stavolta sì, attraverso la poesia. 

Ero ossessionato dalla poesia, ormai da anni, da sempre. La mia scrittura, mi sembrava, era uscita già da un po’, anche se in ritardo, da quel limbo che è il puro esercizio. Ero approdato a una più consapevole necessità espressiva, ma era come se non riuscissi ancora a incanalare bene una “forza” che avvertivo dentro, a darle una forma. Ciononostante, la presentivo. Il pensiero ostinato della scrittura, la cieca tensione verso la scrittura, ma senza che niente sgorgasse davvero, o quanto meno nulla che mi convincesse. Poi un giorno di agosto del 2013, “Vergine e pubica la domenica di Etnapolis”, il verso di apertura del mio poema, è stato insieme un dono venuto da chissà dove e una sfida lanciata e non più ritrattabile, il momento in cui per la prima volta mi sono sentito finalmente straniero a me stesso, e fino in fondo me stesso. 

 

D: La scelta di una pluralità di voci, di linguaggi e di registri è nata a monte o in itinere, nel percorso di elaborazione dell’opera?

R: Probabilmente era proprio il sentirmi costretto all’uso di una sola voce – autobiografica e solipsistica – che ingabbiava la mia voce, il motivo per cui sentivo un abisso tra le risorse espressive che pensavo di avere e l’asfittico rivolo di scrittura che veniva fuori nella pagina nel corso delle prove precedenti, di cui non ero mai soddisfatto. L’insoddisfazione era del resto generale, investiva anche le mie letture di allora. Ero convinto che la poesia fosse un mezzo potentissimo di presa di possesso e di trasfigurazione del reale, eppure leggevo tanta poesia contemporanea che mi pareva rinunciare a quell’impresa, farsi pigramente frammentaria, monolinguistica e monostilistica, adagiarsi su alcuni facili trucchetti, giungere in fretta a una qualche epifania, fare bene il compitino, non sbagliare, non rischiare. Desideravo andare invece nella direzione opposta, anche se più esposta al rischio del fallimento. Nonostante avessi pensato inizialmente a un solo personaggio (quello del commesso di libreria, che per di più aveva il mio stesso nome) capace di portare su di sé il significato dell’opera, gli altri personaggi pirandellianamente reclamavano più spazio, desideravano muoversi, avere una loro storia da compiere, ciascuno era certissimo di poter arricchire con pari dignità il senso del libro. Sono quindi giunto presto alla convinzione che non sarebbe esistito un corifeo che parlasse al posto o per conto del coro. Non mi sono dato limiti, del resto. L’unico limite era: è davvero necessario questo o quell’espediente, questo o quel salto linguistico o stilistico? L’opera è cresciuta su sé stessa, portata dalla sua stessa forza, direi, fino a rompere gli argini della poesia e diventare, nella quinta sezione, quasi per naturale conseguenza, anche prosa. Suite Etnapolis mi è cresciuta come un albero. 

 

D: Se dovessi pensare ad un’altra versione di Suite Etnapolis, come la immagineresti? Una rappresentazione teatrale, una versione cinematografica o altro? 

R: Spero che chi legga Suite Etnapolis senta che l’autore, come notava Andrea Accardi in un suo intervento sul mio libro, stia in realtà muovendo una telecamera, che le “voci” che lo abitano non siano soltanto voci, ma personaggi che si muovono e interagiscono in uno spazio fisico, che infine “suite” rimandi già dal titolo alla musica, alle suite della musica rock in particolare. Ho sempre amato quelle opere che non abitano soltanto un genere, che riescono a sconfinare, a straripare, a trarre linfa da altri linguaggi: penso a un album come The Wall dei Pink Floyd, per esempio, diventato poi un film, o a Dogville di Lars Von Trier, recitato in uno spazio che potrebbe essere il palcoscenico di un teatro, scandito in capitoli e raccontato da una voce esterna, che può far pensare al narratore di un romanzo. Ho avuto già due contatti per una possibile riduzione teatrale di Suite, poi per vari motivi naufragati. Sarebbe un sogno, poi, se si potesse realizzarne una versione cinematografica, ma non oso sperare tanto. Da qualche tempo, invece, mi è saltata in mente l’idea di cercare contatti nel mondo editoriale del graphic novel. Insomma, come uno dei personaggi che mi è più caro di Suite Etnapolis, Daria, la cassiera del bar che infine compie una radicale, splendida “metamorfosi”, mi piacerebbe che anche il mio libro smetta di essere soltanto un poema.
