Un ritratto di Maria Occhipinti
“Mi sentivo straniera in patria, perseguitata, incompresa. Allora ho cominciato a girare per il Nord Italia, per la Svizzera, Francia, Inghilterra, Marocco, Stati Uniti, Hawaji, Messico. Facevo la bambinaia, l’aiuto sarta, la pellicciaia, ho saldato le corde delle navi per vivere”.
Così si raccontava nel 1975 Maria Occhipinti al giornalista Enzo Forcella, in un filmato RAI. Animatrice del movimento Non si parte, appena venticinquenne e incinta di 5 mesi, si stese a terra davanti alle ruote di un camion militare, opponendosi alla nuova leva dei giovani siciliani, chiamati a contrastare a fianco degli Alleati l’avanzata dei nazisti al Centro Nord. Per questo, sarà incarcerata e poi confinata a Ustica, schedata a vita come sovversiva. Da questo gesto il giovane regista modicano, Luca Scivoletto, è partito per girare il documentario Con quella faccia da straniera. Eppure l’esilio in lei non assume mai il sapore di un rimpianto (Nadia Terranova).
Nella sua autobiografia Una donna di Ragusa del 1957 (I edizione Landi editore, II edizione edizione Feltrinelli 1976) e in Una donna libera edito da Sellerio nel 2004, Maria racconta la sua vita. Era un’autodidatta che non aveva pratica della scrittura ma che trovò una lingua per raccontarsi. Nel suo primo libro, la giovane nata a Ragusa racconta della su “resistenza”. Mentre a Nord i Comitati di Liberazione combattevano, in Sicilia i governi militari alleatie poi quelli del “Regno del Sud”, provavano a ricostruire una nuova convivenza. La Resistenza qui è un’altra Resistenza, le lotte per il pane, le insurrezioni contro il richiamo alle armi, le lotte contadine per la terra. Maria era povera dove i poveri erano molti ed esserlo era molto di più di una privazione materiale: uno spaesamento generale dell’anima e del corpo. (Dalla nota introduttiva di Carlo Levi alla prima edizione). Nel secondo si concentra sul quotidiano, l’ordinario di una donna libera, appunto, che rivendica il diritto alla parola, alla manifestazione e alla testimonianza, in un contesto tradizionalmente avverso alle libertà femminili. Dopo essere stata espulsa dal Partito comunista dove si batteva per i diritti delle donne, perché i moti del Non si parte venivano bollati come azioni dettati da gruppi fascisti e separatisti, tornata a casa dal confino, trovò il marito che si era legato a un’altra donna. Decise allora di lasciare la sua amata Sicilia portando con sé la sua bambina. Solo gli anarchici le aprirono la porta e figure della politica e della cultura come Gianni Grasso e la giornalista e femminista Adele Cambria.
Nel centenario della sua nascita, il 5 novembre 2021, la Società delle Letterate, in collaborazione con la Casa Internazionale delle Donne di Roma, ha voluto ricordare e diffondere la memoria di Maria Occhipinti e insieme “ la ricerca di una genealogia capace di modificare l’orizzonte politico e simbolico di un Sud ancora oggi percepito come subalterno”. A guidare l’incontro a cui hanno partecipato studiose come Elvira Federici, presidente della SIL, Adriana Chemello, Serena Todesco, e le scrittrici Maria Attanasio, Maria Rosa Cutrufelli, Gisella Modica, Nadia Terranova, è stato il tema “ Il Sud delle donne”, a partire dallo sguardo di Maria Occhipinti e dal suo orizzonte simbolico e radicale, con l’intento di ridare senso e visibilità ad altre straordinarie “madri del Sud” che dal dopoguerra ad oggi hanno messo di traverso il loro corpo contro il patriarcato, e per questo travisate o rimpicciolite dalle interpretazioni maschili.
Dice sua figlia Marilena nella nota di Una donna libera a lei dedicato: “Sappiamo poco o niente di cos’era veramente la vita delle donne quando adulterio e abbaondono del tetto coniugale erano reati, e il prete e il carabiniere prolungavano fuori casa il dominio del padre, del fratello, del marito”. Di quella zona grigia dal dopoguerra agli anni Settanta del Novecento, quando la Costituzione garantiva uguali diritti a tutti, ma costumi, tradizioni, leggi, poteri quotidiani, tenevano le donne in uno stato di sottomissione. Ne sappiamo poco perché quel potere era soprattutto sequestro di parola, di testimonianza e di memoria. E Una donna libera è l’autobiografia di un’invincibile ribelle, incapacace di concepire, prima che di sopportare un ruolo subalterno e disuguale per nascista e per sesso, la soppressione del proprio diritto di parola
La sua è una presa di parola politica e personale e riempie un vuoto, tiene a sottolineare Maria Rosa Cutrufelli al Convegno del 5 novembre. Un libro non molto letto, né accolto come doveva essere, confermando il pregiudizio che pesa su di esso. Racconta di sua madre, nata povera, vissuta povera, come lei, che non aveva mai attraversato lo Stretto di Messina, e quello di Maria è prima di tutto un attraversamento simbolico. L’accompagnano i suoi compagni anarchici; il Noi è la comunità politica di cui Maria racconta la generosità e anche le tante viltà. Narra di un’autodidatta nata in un ambiente in cui alle donne “mancava persino la forza di gemere”, diceva il siciliano Borgese. La sua vita è un eterno peregrinare: si ferma solo a Roma a causa della malattia e dove morirà nel 1996 a 75 anni. Antimilitarista sempre, manifesta contro le donne militari, raccoglie firme rivolte a Nilde Iotti, allora presidente della Camera. Negli anni Ottanta è a Comiso, a manifestare contro l’installazione dei missili. Aveva nel frattempo incontrato il femminismo. In Una donna libera fa riferimento a un convegno femminista del ’77 e scrive: “In quegli incontri non trovai l’ardore. Il femminismo romano di Effe è anemico”. Mentre lei prima di andare a dormire amava guardare le stelle. Il continuo tornare al suo vissuto è un tentativo di tornare al sé e di essere riconosciuta da sua figlia. (Gisella Modica)
Fu l’ex prete Pietro Angarano, divenuto suo compagno, e con cui rimase per sette anni, a spingerla a scrivere. Per Maria la scrittura diventa catarsi, vi è una perpetua ricerca del sé, un’estensione del suo corpo nella scrittura, un suo stare in presenza del mondo, un sapere del dolore degli altri, essere vicina agli ultimi, ci ricorda ancora Gisella Modica. Autrice anche di racconti – Il carrubo e altri racconti (1993) e di poesie. In tutta la sua produzione sono sempre presenti le origini e conservate ovunque andasse. La sua poesia, ricorda la scrittrice Maria Attanasio, non resta mai relegata al suo io, ma si fa respiro del mondo, dettate dall’urgenza del suo sguardo. Si fondono in essa l’io e il mondo, la bellezza e la giustizia, l’impegno motivato da una forte urgenza e il sentimento. Persino la sua disobbedienza non nasce da un’occasione ma dal sentire. “Ovunque fosse nata, sarebbe stata disobbediente”.
